The Problem With Ear Muffs

The theory behind the design of the ear muff (and ear plug as well) is to attempt to block all sound from entering the ear. The only way a muff can accomplish this is to create a seal around the outer ear and add material to block the sound. That is why the higher NRR (Noise Reduction Rating) muffs are generally the heaviest. The ZEM uses new and entirely different technology. The patented ZEM technology directs sound away from the ear and cancels it. The ZEM achieves a high NRR without adding bulk.
Do you wear shooting glasses? Hopefully you do. When ear muffs are tested in the lab and assigned an NRR value, the testing is conducted with the muff sealed completely around the outer ear. When you wear your shooting glasses, that seal is broken. Those test results no longer apply to your situation. You are NOT getting the protection you think you are because a muff was NOT designed to work with shooting glasses. Sound is reaching your ear through the break in the seal along the shooting glass frame.
Shooting glasses do not affect the performance of the ZEM. The sound reduction as tested is the sound reduction you get. In other words, you are better protected with the ZEM.
