FAQs
What do the NRR numbers mean? SensGard has 26 and 31.
The NRR or Noise Reduction Rating, is a guide to compare different hearing protection devices. The higher the number, the more noise is reduced.
Because the numbers are measured in decibels and are logarithmic, the amount of sound reduced is doubled every 10 dB. So a device with an NRR of 31 is giving you twice the protection of a device with an NRR of 21.
How do I know what number or NRR rating I need?
Consider both the noise environment you are in and your own personal preferences.
If the noise level is comparable to a lawn mower, or table saw, or you want to drown out background noise, or make a movie theater or concert venue less intrusive, our NRR 26 model would work well.
If the noise level is intense, like a chainsaw, a jackhammer, a shotgun or construction site, our NRR 31 model would be the choice.
On a personal level, if you already have hearing loss and want to protect as much as you can, the NRR 31 model is the best choice.
Your budget may be a factor. Generally, the higher the NRR of the device, the higher the price.
Is SensGard an ear plug or an ear muff?
Neither. SensGard is a third style of hearing protection, new to the market.
Ear plugs are designed to block sound by filling the ear canal. They must be inserted deep into the ear canal to work effectively.
Ear muffs are designed to seal around the ear, blocking sound from getting into the ear. Pressure from the headband keeps the pads against the head. However, if you wear glasses or safety glasses, the seal of the pad against the head is broken, so you will lose some protection.
SensGard seals at the outside of the ear canal and is designed to redirect sound energy into the chambers where it is dampened and cancelled. The chambers have been tuned so the damaging energy does not go into your ear, but sound at a safe level can.
